Safety
Your safety is very important to us. Online ads aren't riskier than their traditional counterparts. In fact, using wayMadAds may be safer than taking random phone calls from an ad posted in the paper. We've built in additional security features to make this an even safer experience. We've done a lot to help protect you, but there are some measures that you can take for added protection.
Personal Information
First off, we do not share or sell our membership list. Period. We encourage you not to include personal information in the description area of your ad, especially your email, which could then be captured by spambots that roam the web looking for email addresses. However, you can post this information if you wish but should be aware of the possible negative consenquences of doing so. If you do decide to post it, don't write it out as you normally would. Try replacing the "@" with "AT" or "[at]". Or alter it like this, "yourname[at]NO_SPAM_REMOVEsomething[dot]com".
Unlike more traditional ads, your information, like your phone number or email address, does not appear publicly at wayMadAds. This is standard and is not something that you have to pay extra for. Your phone information will only appear to another member and only when they are signed in. Even then, we do not display your email address. Your email address will only be visible if you choose to reply to an ad or reply to someone who has enquired about your ad.
The mapping feature does reveal information about your address, however you can limit how much is available, such as removing your house number, or remove all of it. It is a great feature, but may not be applicable or desired in all cases. Either way, we give you power over using this feature in your ads.
Personal Safety
Like all forms of personal advertising, we encourage our members to exercise personal judgement. Always exchange a few emails or phone calls to get a better feel for the buyer or seller you are dealing with. If you don't feel comfortable or something doesn't feel right, then it may be better to pass on the deal.
When you reach that point of agreement, now it's time to close the deal. Again, as you will probably be meeting to exchange payment and goods, make sure that you are comfortable with the location. Pick a time and location that you are comfortable with, and take a friend if you'd like. If you aren't comfortable meeting at your home or their home, then pick a location that you both agree with; perhaps a busy parking lot or a coffee shop between your homes.
Financial Safety
Obviously you can save a lot of money finding things of interest on wayMadAds. However, like all secondary markets, there may be additional risk compared to buying from your local store. With risk comes reward and this risk can often be rewarded through considerable savings. Always agree on the method of payment beforehand. Whether you pay with cash or check, all up front or a deposit, with a contract or just a handshake, it all depends on the specifics of the transaction and what you are both comfortable with.
